Horsham - Second ODI

The Second ODI was played at Horsham Cricket Club in Sussex on Friday 17 August. We had played a match at this ground before when the Australian Over 60s Team toured in 2015.
The twisted church spire overlooking the ground was a familiar sight. The spire had been built using new oak which warped over the years.
The Horsham Cricket Club was founded in 1806 but reports exist of cricket matches in Horsham dating back to 1768.
Before the game, Robin and Ron inspected the pitch on which they were to bowl.
The team photos were taken.

The teams then lined up for the national anthems.
As this was Robin's first ODI against England for over 70s cricket he was presented with his cap by Australian team captain, Ian Petherick.
Australia bowled first and both Robin and Ron bowled tightly restricting the England batting to 38 runs in the first 16 overs. (Robin 8 overs, 1 maiden, 0 wicket for 21 and Ron 8 overs, 2 maidens, 0 wicket for 17).
England batsmen then went on to make 3 for 271 off their 50 overs. Australian fielding was not up to its usual standard with seven catches dropped. In reply the Australian batsmen made 9 for 249. One ODI game each ensured that the Third ODI would be the decider for this series.

Horsham - County Game 7

We were back at the Horsham Cricket Club ground on Monday 20 August for a game against Sussex.

Sussex Team

Australia batted first and scored 7 for 197 in its 45 overs. Sussex was all out for 139 in the 39th over. Ron Kasputtis took three wickets while Roger Edmunds, Alan Reid and Bruce Pooley each took two. John Costello took the remaining wicket.  Another good win for Australia.

During the two days at Horsham I spent some time exploring.
St Mary's Church is next to the cricket ground. The remains of a Norman church can still be found in some of the structure however most of the church was rebuilt in 1247. Alterations have been made over time.
Inside the church are plaques for various members of the Shelley family, including the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was born in Horsham.
The street outside the church gates leads to the centre of the town. The date on the house outside the gate is 1615.
As you walk to the town there are a number of interesting style of buildings.

The former Town Hall building in Market Square is a dominant building in Horsham.
The bandstand is a colourful sight in summer.
Horsham is a busy centre for shopping.
Buildings of character line the streets.
Next to the church is a Garden of Remembrance in memory of those from the area who died during World War I.
There are also paths beside the stream
and close to the town there are fields with grazing sheep.
The railway line passes close to the ground.

Game 16 against Sussex at Horsham

Off again, this time to Horsham Sports Club, another multi-sporting complex.
It also had impressive club rooms and an attractive cricket ground.
Australia batted first with John Stackpoole, Neil King and Pat Logue retiring at 50. At the end of the innings Australia had compiled 2 for 286.
Australian also bowlers performed well with Brian Scott taking 3 wickets for 27 off 9 overs, John Dedman had 3wickets for four runs and Neil King had 2 wickets for 7 runs. John Stackpoole as wicket keeper for the game had 3 stumpings. A great effort all round.
Sussex were all out for 151.
During the game I went for a walk to the town and also explored the area around the ground.
I also met some of the local inhabitants.
