Exploring Bunbury 4

Sunday 26 November

A quiet day. After breakfast I went for a walk along the foreshore in the opposite direction to last time.

The surf club was holding activities on the beach.
I also located the remains of the seawater baths which existed until the Second World War.
There were lots of flies so I used my fly net on my hat which helped to protect me a little.
We drove to Eaton, a suburb seven kilometres from Bunbury and had a hot drink at San Churro at Eaton Fair Shopping Centre. From another shop we purchased salad wraps to eat for lunch back at the hotel.
In the afternoon I went for a walk along Victoria Street to take a photo of the war memorial. While I was taking the photo from a round-about in the road, a motorist kindly stopped so I had a clear view. We then exchanged smiles and waves as she drove off.
The next stop was the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery housed in the former Convent of Mercy built in 1885. The art gallery has operated in the centre since 1987.
There was an exhibition of paintings by Rhona Wallam,
Alternative Archive – artworks from regional Western Australia,

ceramic artworks by Stewart Scrambler,
and a photographic exhibition of lunch bars in different parts of Western Australia.

The gallery was an excellent place to visit.

For dinner we shared the second cheese and chicken with salad wrap that we had purchased for lunch.

Bunbury weather –partly cloudy, minimum temperature 17.5 maximum temperature 33.9.

National Championships - fourth match

Tuesday 28 November

The final cricket match for Victoria 2  was against NSW. It was played at Capel, approximately a 30 minute drive inland from Bunbury. Victoria 2 batted first and at the end of 40 overs had scored 165 runs. NSW replied with 117.
Victoria 2 was therefore 5th in First Division.
Victoria 1 defeated the ACT to win the First Division championship.
Players sometimes leave items of equipment out to dry. This collection looks as if it should be an art exhibit.
During the game I went for a walk into the town and took some photos.
Like many places we visited in this region, murals were often on walls of buildings.
Many towns we visited had public libraries. This one also had a mural on the wall.
The Shire Offices were in the main road.
The Capelberry Cafe and Delicatesan was across the road.
The RSL building and war memorial - another feature of the town.
The cricket ground was on the edge of this country town.
After the game we returned to Bunbury for the championship dinner which was at the Italian Club. Entre was prawn cocktail or Asian noodles, salad and beef. The main course was a smorgasbord offering lasagna (beef or vegetable) - I had some of each - plus a choice of roast meat with potatoes. The beans ran out when we reached the end of the queue. Desert was a lemon slice or sticky date pudding. Rodney Hogg was the guest speaker. He was probably funny but spoke too quickly for many of us oldies to follow.

Back at the hotel we started to pack our bags for the trip to Perth.

Bunbury weather – partly cloudy, minimum temperature 17.7 maximum temperature 25.

Exploring Bunbury 5

There are many wonderful things to do and sites to see in Bunbury, many within easy walking distance from the centre of town. Some have already appeared in other posts.

There are many sculptures and art works in the town including The Navigators on the Casurina roundabout,
Brother and Sister at the intersection of Wellington and Victoria streets,
and artistic structures in Stirling Street.
Street art located in streets and lanes is a feature in the city.
Some of the murals illustrate part of Bunbury's history including

timber
and ports
Arriving in Bunbury at the end of November there were lots of Christmas decorations in the streets.
They are colourful during the day
but at night lights on and near the decorations
are well worth viewing. A special Christmas festival is held in December.

Perth

Wednesday 29 November

Bunbury weather – minimum temperature 12.9 with a maximum temperature of 27 degrees predicted and a partly cloudy day. It was certainly cloudy at 6.30.

We finished packing for the next part of our holiday. The weather forecast for Perth was partly cloudy with a possible morning shower, minimum temperature 15.6 with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees.

After breakfast we drove to Perth arriving shortly before 11 am.

Gina and Andrew met us at the airport where we left the hire car and drove us to their home in Perth. There we met Jessie. Jessie took a while to become used to us but once Robin threw her the ball a few times we were accepted.
We went to Hillarys where we had lunch at the Beach House and drinks at San Churro.
We then walked around Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Back at Andrew and Gina's home Andrew and I looked at some family correspondence from our parents and grandparents time.

Thursday 29 November

Another fine sunny day and we were off to explore part of Perth. It was a while since our last visit so it was good to explore the area once more.

Gina drove us to Kings Park from where we had a good view of the city.
The park also contains the Western Australian Botanic Gardens
and the War Memorial.
We then drove to South Perth and took a ferry across the Swan River to Elizabeth Quay.
We spent some time exploring the quay
including the First Contact sculpture welcoming visitors to the quay
and a metal model of a sailing ship.
We then took the ferry back to South Perth
where we were greeted by a yellow frilled neck lizard
connected to a yellow numbat.

Andrew, Gina, Michael, Robin and I had lunch at Miss Chows – spring rolls, dumplings etc – before going for a walk by the river.

In the evening we headed to a local park (Emerald Park) where food vans had been set up
and enjoyed selecting dinner in the park at Edgewater Night Market. The chicken teriyaki bun with salad and chips was very tasty.

Friday 1 December

Andrew and Gina took us to the airport for the flight home to Melbourne after a most enjoyable holiday in south west Western Australia. We arrived home in time for Robin to go and watch the under ten cricket team play their match.
