On the road again, this time for a cricket tournament in Hawaii. We left Melbourne on 7 September to fly to Sydney and from there to Hawaii arriving late morning on 7 September. At the airport we were presented with leis before boarding the bus to take us to the Queen Kapiolani Hotel in Waikiki.
When we arrived some of our party were told that our rooms would be ready in half an hour so we waited in the lobby. One and a half hours later we collected our door cards and headed to our room on the eighteenth floor. We later discovered that the day we arrived was a public holiday so there were fewer staff that day.
The view from our balcony was almost worth the wait.
Across the road is Honolulu Zoo and behind the zoo are sports grounds and parkland, including the cricket pitch. Diamond Head is in the background.
We also have a partial view of the ocean
as well as residential and commercial buildings.
Once we had unpacked we went for a walk down the main street - Kalakaua Avenue - with the beach on one side and shops and restaurants on the other, before meeting the other members in our group near the pool on the third floor. Some of the players then walked down to the park where the cricket was to be played.
The ground is in a great setting but with all the recent rain the grass was long and thick. We were assured that it would be cut before our first game.
We joined a group who had toured in Hawaii before and recommended dinner at Tiki's Grill near the hotel. Five of us selected fish and chips which was a mistake as the fish could only be described as dry and chewey - hopefully I will not have fish like that again. After a very long day it was time for an early night.
